BWX Technologies Inc

Company Overview
History and Background
BWX Technologies Inc. (BWXT) has a rich history rooted in the development of nuclear propulsion for naval vessels. Its origins can be traced back to the early days of nuclear power and the Manhattan Project. A significant milestone was its role in developing the nuclear reactor for the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered submarine. Over time, the company has evolved from a defense contractor focused on nuclear submarines to a diversified provider of nuclear components and services across various sectors, including nuclear power, medical isotopes, and industrial applications. It was formerly part of The Babcock & Wilcox Company and was spun off as an independent entity.
Core Business Areas
- Government Operations: BWXT's Government Operations segment is a cornerstone of its business, focusing on providing nuclear reactors, fuel, and services for naval propulsion systems, particularly for the U.S. Navy's fleet of submarines and aircraft carriers. This segment also encompasses nuclear weapons components, research and development, and decommissioning services for nuclear facilities. They are a critical supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Energy.
- Energy Business: The Energy Business segment is dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and servicing components for the commercial nuclear power industry. This includes reactor components, steam generators, and fuel assemblies. They also provide specialized services for plant life extension, maintenance, and decommissioning of commercial nuclear power plants.
