Company Overview
History and Background
The Mosaic Company was formed in 2004 through the merger of IMC Global and Cargill Crop Nutrition. It is a leading producer and marketer of concentrated phosphate and potash, key components in crop nutrients. The company has expanded through strategic acquisitions and organic growth to become a global leader in the agricultural inputs industry.
Core Business Areas
- Phosphates: This segment mines phosphate rock, produces phosphoric acid, and manufactures phosphate-based crop nutrients and animal feed ingredients. It accounts for a significant portion of Mosaic's revenue.
- Potash: This segment mines and processes potash, a key ingredient in fertilizers. Mosaic is one of the world's largest potash producers.
- Mosaic Fertilizantes: This segment, primarily based in Brazil, produces and distributes fertilizers, animal nutrition products, and provides agricultural services. It serves the growing South American agricultural market.

Top Products and Market Share
Key Offerings
- Phosphate Fertilizers (DAP/MAP): Diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) are widely used phosphate fertilizers. Mosaic is a major global producer. The market is competitive with Nutrien, ICL Group, and PhosAgro. Mosaic is a top producer globally, commanding a considerable share in key markets.
- Potash Fertilizers (MOP): Muriate of potash (MOP) is a primary source of potassium for crops. Mosaic operates potash mines in North America. Competitors include Nutrien, BHP, and Uralkali. Mosaic is one of the largest potash producers, competing for market share with other global players.
- Micronutrients: A range of micronutrient fertilizers aimed at addressing micronutrient deficiencies in soils. Competitors include BASF and Yara International.
Market Dynamics
Industry Overview
The crop nutrient industry is influenced by global agricultural trends, commodity prices, weather patterns, and government regulations. Demand is driven by the need to increase crop yields to feed a growing population. The industry is cyclical, with prices fluctuating based on supply and demand dynamics.
Positioning
Mosaic is positioned as a leading global producer of phosphate and potash. Its competitive advantages include large-scale production capacity, access to raw materials, and a global distribution network.
Total Addressable Market (TAM)
The global fertilizer market is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of USD. Mosaic is positioned to capture a significant share of this TAM, particularly in phosphate and potash markets, with expansion into South America.
